What are Dentures?

• When a person has missing teeth, he/she may experience variety of problems. The person may become less confident in their smile and have difficulty speaking and eating certain foods.
• Dentures are appliances that are custom made to replace a person's missing teeth and restore the appearance & functions that were lost.
• The denture can be complete denture, implant supported denture, removable partial denture, cast partial denture.
• A full denture is used when all of the person's teeth are missing and a partial denture is used when only some of the teeth are missing. These dentures can be made fixed with support of dental implants.

Complete dentures:

Complete dentures are given those who don’t have any teeth. These can be made removable/ fixed. If patient have few teeth but they are not stable or causing pain our dentist in Udaipur advice to remove them. Once the teeth are removed gums are left to heal for minimum of 4 to 5 weeks (depends on wearer condition and health). Once the healing is done impressions, trails are done and dentures are given to the patient. These can be made with normal and flexible material both. Removable Partial Denture:

Those who have few or single missing tooth removable dentures are given. Removable partial dentures take very little time to build and restore functions. Removable partial dentures can also be made by normal material and flexible material. In normal RPD’s metal clasps are given and the material is a bit rigid. Inflexible RPD’s instead of metal clasp acrylic attachment is given and these dentures are very flexible to wear and remove.

Cast Partial Denture:

Cast partial denture is a more advanced version of the removable partial denture. It consists of a metal framework combined with tissue-colored acrylic and replacement teeth. As compared to the conventional acrylic denture, Cast Partial Denture is stronger, more durable, and retentive. However, the fabrication of cast partial dentures is more costly, time-consuming, and complex as compared to conventional acrylic dentures. Each denture is specifically designed and fabricated for the individual patient.

Routine Denture Care & Maintenance:

1. Remove your denture from your mouth, brush your tongue, gums, and palate to clean the area as well as increase the blood circulation in these areas.
2. Clean the denture using a denture cleansing paste or liquid soap with a soft denture brush.
3. Rinse the denture with cold or warm water. (Stay away from using hot or boiling water because it will warp the denture and it will not fit.
4. Dentures need to stay moist at all times, so soak the denture in a cleansing solution or normal water when you are not wearing the dentures.
5. Avoid using a hard toothbrush and abrasive toothpaste on your denture as they scratch the denture teeth and cause scratches that collect food and cause discoloration.
6. You can use a denture adhesive for better retention of the dentures. Do not use an adhesive on a loose or denture that does not fit well. A loose denture may need a Reline or other repairs to improve its fit.

General Tips for Denture Wearers:

1. Avoid eating hard or sticky food for the first few weeks.
2. Break your food into smaller pieces; this makes it easier to chew.
3. Chew with your back teeth instead of your front ones.
4. Balance the denture by chewing food on both sides of your mouth.
5. Practice speaking with your dentures as wearing dentures normally changes the way you pronounce some words.

Implant-Supported Dentures

When a few or all missing are replaced and patients aren’t want to wear removable teeth then fixed teeth are given by dental implants. At our clinic in Udaipur, our Implantologist Dr. Siddharth Jain does all kinds of dental implants to provide fixed teeth to patients.

With implants, Implant Supported Overdenture and Fixed dentures are given. Proper clinical and radiographical examination of the oral cavity and bone is done. If your bone and systemic health are in good condition teeth are given with the support of implants.

Once the examinations are done your remaining teeth (If Present) are removed and immediately implants placement is done. Then the site is left intact for three months. After three months of impressions, trials are done, and fix denture/overdenture is delivered.

The difference between a fixed denture and Overdenture:

• More implants are used in Fix dentures.
• The strength of the fixed denture is very high.
• The patient can not remove fixed dentures by him/herself. Whereas overdenture is removed and fixed by the wearer itself.
• Fixed dentures are low maintenance.
• Cost-wise overdentures are economic and fixed dentures are expensive because in overdentures fewer implants are used.
• Fix dentures are flangeless whereas overdentures are just modified versions of complete dentures.
